The story

A life shaped by the mountains, the ballfield, the road, and the people worth writing about.

01

The story

“Before I knew what a hero was, I knew the people who showed me how to live.”

Matt Stillwell's music is rooted in lived experience. The songs are country because the life is country—not as a costume, but as a way of seeing family, place, work, loss, loyalty, and home.

01

The mountains

Raised in Sylva, North Carolina, Matt grew up surrounded by Blue Ridge mountains, family stories, sports, church, and the kind of community where people remember where you came from.

02

The ballfield

Before music became the road, baseball was the dream. Matt was an All-Conference player at Western Carolina University and played for Coach Keith LeClair—an influence that would shape his life far beyond the field.

03

The songs

Nashville turned a work ethic built in sports into a catalog of more than eighty songs, seven albums, Billboard-charting singles, and thousands of shows across the country.

04

The life behind them

Marriage, fatherhood, losing his dad, hometowns, old friends, and the miles in between became the real center of the music. “Hey Dad” connected because it was not written around the truth—it came straight through it.

05

The purpose

Coach LeClair’s fight with ALS never left Matt. BEAT ALS now brings music, sports, mobility, storytelling, and immediate hope together in a mission built to serve people and pursue a cure.

“You've got to write about what you know. You have to live to learn anything.”

Chapter Zero

Before the records, films, events, and mission, there was a kid from Sylva learning that the strongest stories come from the people and places that shape us. Chapter Zero follows that journey—from childhood and the ballfield through music, family, and purpose.
